Outstanding historical treatment, as always Desert Dog. I have a .40 S&W P229 made in West Germany, and to my taste and hand, it's flawless. Heavy piece of iron, though! It's perplexing that LE Agencies expend the time and effort to select a weapon, then a few years later maybe switch to something else, and then at a later date perhaps go back to their original choice. Makes one think that perhaps some "Consideration" changed hands, or maybe not.
Thanks for sharing the barrel cooler info.
What light and mount is that?
They is no light on my upland shotgun. Perhaps you are talking about the Shotkam camera?
Perfect timing on a subject that needed to be covered. Thanks
Super blades, I bought one from Himalayan Imports several years ago, I was surprised by the quality of the blade considering the inexpensive price I paid, it was incredibly sharp when I received it. I was concerned the edge would chip or 'roll over' with heavy use. I had some small Mesquite trees in my yard that I wanted to remove so I went at them with my Khukuri I was surprise at how well it chopped considering the Mesquite is quite hard and there was no deformation of the edge at all, not even a single nick or chip. And the edge was still razor sharp when I was done.
Got my leupold VX-5HD cds-zl2 on sale for 1000 so far it's decent except the windage knob is pretty cheap and fell off
Why did you need a rail? Why not some Talley one piece bases / rings?
@@richardhayber5298 So I can get correct eye relief with this scope.
Good stuff ❤
You make some excellent points about hunting and hunting scopes. Your points about weight vs durability are especially important. I’m encouraged that you think Trijicon is a good choice. I reside and hunt in Virginia where the whitetail population is huge and tag limits are generous. Mostly I hunt hilly terrain. You might not be able to see deer from thirty yards if you’re in a tree stand; because the laurel thickets are very dense. Sometimes the opportunities are long; just seldom. I asked a salesman at a large retailer if they had Trijicon. I’ve used an AccuPoint often in a 1-4. He asked a good question about what I was putting it on. I told him 6 ARC; and then he was focused on the long range potential of the cartridge. Even though I said my shots are as close as twenty feet and out to two hundred fifty yards, he was excited to show me a 4-25 scope priced around $2,300. That scope meets the capabilities of the cartridge; but it’s not appropriate for the task at hand. My hunting just isn’t long range shooting.
Desert dog. Whats woth the weatherby 307. Is it not just a vanguard?
95% of my hunting is done with fixed parallax scopes. Run a Maven RS2 2-10x38 on my ultralight 25-06ai & 280ai rifles, and that scope has served me well out west in the midwest and back home in the southeast on both guns so cant complain.
Brilliant. Greetings from South Africa.

Cold steel Bowie machete is the stoutest knife I have ever owned
I have a CVA Scout just like yours in .35 Whelen. I use it for Primitive whitetail deer hunting in Louisiana. I have been using the 180 Grain Barnes TTSX since it was new, and they have performed great at 2977 f.p.s. Edited to add: I know a 180-grain bullet isn't ideal in a .35 whelen. However, I only shoot out to 250 yards and the 180 grain Barnes is easy for me to find.
I must have well over 100 knives, yet still grab my Buck 110 that I have had for over 40 years for actual hunting applications. But hey, the rest look great in their sheaths. !
Great video. I have the now discontinued Remington 7600 35 Whelan Carbine that I use down here in Victoria Australia for hound hunting large sambar deer. I also have a Tikka T3X 9.3x62. But I like the compact and fast handling nature of the 7600. It's also ideal for pigs up North. For hound hunters after the 30/06 the 35 Whelan has always been popular on sambar deer. Although for the past 10 years the 9.3x62 has also become very popular. Thanks for sharing!
I remember the year 2000 I had bought my first sks.A full Russian with all matching numbers.Wished I still had it.Anyways.1000 rds of wolf ammo was $100!
Great finally a honest straight forward advice
What's a 'bowie knife'? Well, I dunno, but I know one when I see it... Many thanks to USSC Justice Potter Stewart in Jacobellis v Ohio 1964...🤣
Keep using the term “Utard”. It keeps people out of my state. Nothing to see here. Nothing to hunt here. Move along.
As long as Utards keep writing me, they will have a home on Hunt Camp Mail.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 Oh I know. I actually love your channel and enjoy the good natured ribbing of my home state. I was just being a little tongue in cheek because Utah is getting too crowded and I don’t want more hunters in my spots. :)

Many thanks for your clear instructions! Very very useful!!!
In a saturated shilled media environment, this is one of the few video resources I can give unqualified praise; the combination of practical experience and historical reference is ace (the book recommendation videos remain my favorite and I hope you keep up with them periodically). A QRD on what a Newsom Presidential candidacy from a hunter/2A perspective might be helpful in these spheres if that materialized between now and November.
ADVISE,JUST VOTE REPUBLICAN and hope it will get better.
Your content is more than worthy for my subscription. Honestly my favorite firearms channel. No tactical BS , no talking out of your butt … its from actual hunting experience. I appreciate you also being honest and speaking out against long-distance target shooting at animals. God bless you and yours.
The comparison is helpful, thanks. But Accraglass is hardly ever used anymore? Really?
@@jeffdavis7356 I don't know of any custom rifle builders and top gunsmiths using it anymore.
I had no idea. You have certainly given me a lot to think about and some things to consider I never thought of before such as a compression issue. If I can deal with the mixing requirements of marinetex that sounds like what I would prefer. I subscribed your channel. Thanks
Looking forward to the reloading video. Good man
Sound advice……Hammer makes an awesome bullet too !!!
Good morning, I know you don't like sharing reload data. But what powder were you using? When you loaded your 250 grain TTSx's. ?

I see that Ron Spomer got a new Weatherby rifle and was shooting groups. He got, and most of us get flyers. What's with the 'flyer' business? What causes that? Music for the memes was good.
@@dansaver8247 I just watched that video. Notice how he was rocking the front rest during several of his shots. That will throw shots off. When people shoot, I never watch their target; my eyes are always on the rifle and shooter. Many things cause fliers, but human error is the common cause.

Awesome video! Desert dog you had so many excellent answers for a lot of great questions. I really enjoyed you, discussing the incompetence, of the DNR and how they misappropriate funds. I live in Kansas, and wildlife, and Parks is absolutely destroying our wildlife populations. All they want to do is receive more money so they can blow it on stupid shit. And I absolutely loved your comments and bringing to light the weaknesses of the crappy model 700 chambered in the 416 Remington magnum. A great rifle when chambered for a 308 but It’s hard to believe that such an awesome cartridge was born and paired with such an inferior rifle. It makes you wonder what would’ve happened if Winchester hadn’t chambered the model 70 for it? It’s almost like those two were made for each other.
@@forward1165 If not for Winchester clambering it in 1994, the 416 Rem would have died.
I really hate to hear that about Kansas. What part of the state are you in? I love it out there, I used to go every year for pheasant and turkeys. I heard they now made nonresident turkey hunting draw only. We used to be able to just show up and buy tags and hunt. That was 10 years ago and back and the turkey population was unbelievable at that time in north central KS.
Northcentral. About 100 miles north west of Salina. Yeah, the hunting is really sad. Deer numbers seem to drop every year. They dropped the fall turkey season because the numbers have decreased so much. And in this part of the state we have not had a decent pheasant year since the late 90s. And fish and game is doing nothing about it.
@@forward1165 Oh wow, I used to go to Downs. Sounds like you might be close to that area? I started going in 2003 and the pheasant hunting seemed decent then but I had nothing to compare it to of course. The spring turkey hunting was phenomenal from about 2007 up to 2013 then after that I have only been back one time. I really miss coming out there and hate to hear about the decline in wildlife.
Downs is 30 miles southwest. It’s really sad because North Central Kansas had some of the best pheasant hunting in the country.
Thank you very much for this episode… very informative on a variety of topics.. I must obtain some of these African hunting books by the men you mentioned…. Be safe and stay away from the woke molasses 🤦♂️… it’s worse than covid. New Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦
Leupold VX-5HD 2-10x40 on Talley rings fits this rifle, just.
If you can get proper eye relief at 10-power with this rifle and a VX5 2-10x40, with Talley Lighweight rings; you are the only person i've met to accomplish that without a rail or extended front base. Have you tried to shoot it on 10-power (where you need 3.7" of eye relief)? The real-estate on that front tube is very small.
@@desertdogoutdoors1113 it was the screw lock detachable rings on their steel bases. I can’t recall specifically the eye relief on 10x zoom but I remember the tube fit, just. I don’t explicitly recall eye relief being an issue but it was a few years ago - I could be wrong
The only magnum I own is a pre 64 model 70 in .300 H&H. I bought it in Newfoundland years ago when a “.300 magnum” was advertised in a local paper. It was a late 1950s rifle that reportedly was bought by a Bell Island ferry captain. It came with two boxes of Winchester Western cartridges that were bought with the rifle, of which only 8 were fired. It had never had a scope mounted, but I mounted a fixed Leopold 6X in Weaver rings to be period accurate. I’ve shot two NL moose with 190 grain Hornady bullets as that what I had. Bang / flop. I don’t use it often as I don’t need the power and range often but it is a beauty when I need it, or just decide to use it. It is the best handling and shooting pre-64 model 70 that I’ve owned and I’ve owned a few. I tend to favour 180 grain Nosler partitions now @2900 fps which is a moderate load but it shoots amazing and just plain works. Long live the Super .30!!
In the last handful of years there are a lot of new powders that have come to my attention. Since I can't get some of the powders I've used in the past I've had to renew my library of reloading books which list the newer powders.
Pump your brakes bashing chronographs Dog.

Thank you for the compelling insight.

I’m very curious as to what D Zone you were hunting that you harvested a Mule Deer Blacktail hybrid? Seems like you were around D6-D8 Zones and I never heard of Blacktail Deer that far inland. Regardless, helluva a buck! Huge fork by any State’s standards.
Blacktail have enhabited and crossed the Transverse range many decades ago. They spread all the way East of I-5 to Tehachapi. Many of the deer in D9, D10, and D11 are hybrids. Most of the deer in D13 are Hybrids with a fair amount of pure blacktails. This buck was in this zone.
Would love to hear more about the optic (Aimpoint 9000?) on the .505; how it's holding up to recoil, what range are you comfortable with, etc, etc. Also would like to see a "History & Relevance" vid on the 505. Thanks again for the time and effort you put into your vids

🤔 The Kiss Rule Applies to Government Too (Less is More)! The "Bureaucrats" Look at My Hunting and Fishing Lisences as Just Another "Revenue Stream" and Keep Raising The Price of These, But The Quality of These Continues to Decline! They Legalized Marijuana and Gambling, But My Property Taxes Still Keep Going Up Significantly (Which is Not What They Promised, Is It?)! They Continue To Divert Money Into a Growing "General Fund" (Where They "Self Audit", Use The Money For Their "Pet Projects", and This Portion of The State Budget Keeps Growing Bigger and Has No Real "Oversight"/"Direct Accountability") and The Funding is Taken Out of Programs That The Tax Payer Voted To Fund (For Their "Discretionary Spending")! So, Is This "Representative Government" (Their Version of "Democracy")? 🤥 And, Where is All the Money Going? 🕵️♂️ Hummm...I Think You Can Guess Where? 😡 But, Would You Like to Know "Specifically"? 🤯
☹ So, I Am Going To Tell You EXACTLY WHERE...One Legislator Here Owns the Car Dealership That All The State Car Are Bought From; Another Legislator Owns The Computer Store Where All The State Computers Are Bought From (Replaced, By Law, Every 3 Years); Another The Paper Store Where All the Governor's Letterhead at $0.25/Sheet is Bought From (They Fill an Entire Wearhouse As Soon as We Get a New Governor, Instead of Ordering as Needed and Most Get Thrown Out, After Never Being Used); and Most of the State Buildings Are Owned By Legislators and Rented Out To You, the Taxpayer -With 5'x8' Cubicals - at $250,000 per State Employee! It is Your Own Legislators That Are The Crooks and That Have a "Conflict of Interest"! Rules on "Insider Trading"; Conflicts of Interest", etc... Ironically Don't Apply to Them (A 2-Tiered Justice System)! 🤬 Well, Isn't That "Convenient"? 😱
🗽 If Elected Governor of My State, I Will Work To: 1.) Get Rid of 85% of the Government Employees (Already Deemed "Non-Essential") 2.) Reduce "Constituents" Taxes, By Also Getting Rid of Wasteful and "Non-Essential" Spending 3.) I Will Expose The Corruption of These Legislators and Bring a Halt to It 4.) I Will Combine Agencies With "Overlapping Services" 5.) The "State Budget" Will Be Made Public and Itimized To Educate the People, As To Exactly Where Their Tax Dollars Are and Have Been Going and To Expose Those Legislators That Are Gouging The Taxpayers (So, We Can Vote Them Out of Office)...etc...👨⚖

We hand load and have most bullets are available to us through a old friend who has been reloading almost 70 years and has more powders primers brass then a Cabelas store but has never hunted with the big bores for elk. Any recommendations would be applicated! Thanks again for all your hard work on your videos!
